Common Website Mistakes that Hurts your SEO Ranking
Everyone wants to rank higher on search engine pages (SERPs) for their main keywords and yes that isn't very easy always. 

It is difficult but not impossible if you are consistent and focus on your work and test the right search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. 

Instead of following random advice from so-called SEO experts, you can implement to fix these basic issues which are currently taking your rankings down. 
SEO Mistakes That Hurt Your SEO Ranking

1. Not optimizing for the mobile-friendly

In this smartphone era, most of the people prefer hand devices to search for information. 

Does your website is mobile friendly? Search engines have already started rewarding mobile-friendly websites and penalizing sites that are not optimized for mobile devices.

2. Fix your broken pages

Here is an example of the broken page on your site.

The broken page is a dead page which leads to no information blank page for the visitor. It might have happened if you have created the link to deleting an image, a video file or moving page to another location and forgot to update the link. 

Broken pages are bad for the internet and affect your online reputation. Search engine algorithms assume that your page is not high-quality content and so visitors leaving it in seconds causing lower rank ratings.

So one of the biggest mistakes that can harm your SEO efforts and lower your rankings is not fixing your broken or dead pages, and especially when you have backlinks also pointing towards them. 

Solution: You can use a Broken link checker such as Google Search Console to analyze how many pages are broken on your site and quickly take action on them. 

3. Low Content or very Thin Content

Why Google or any other Search engine will index a web page if the content is very thin or adds very little or no value to what's already on the web?

Their mission is to provide relevant, high-quality information to people and your page might stand nowhere doing that. So if your site has thin or very little information, Google will not have a solid reason to include them on the top of the search results.

Solution: So if you want to get higher in result pages, you need to have in-depth relevant content which delivers complete information on the topic. 

Again as the site grows your content will be highlighted even better if not soon, so don't worry about creating a longer content and investing your time in doing topic research.

4. Using images to link to pages on your site

Be aware that Search engines can't read images, they can only read the text. If it is so, how your image links will be read properly? 

If you have any pages on your site which are accessible only through an image, they may not get indexed by Google.

Google recommends that every page on your site has at least one text link.

5. Make sure which is your specific Homepage

Sometimes you think no difference between '' or just '', either address are correct, but for search engines, its an ambiguity. 

If you don't specify, then you may be splitting the SEO authority of your website, which will drop your rankings on Google.

Solution: Choose your homepage address specifically and tell Google by setting up 301 redirects. Your web designer will help you with that.

6. Targeting unrealistic keywords

It is a good idea to think beyond the boundaries, but not always. You need to be realistic while focusing on keywords and think about reaching them. 

The competition will always be there, so if you are a small SEO business and want to rank general keywords like 'seo services', 'seo tips', the changes are very low. 

Solution: Long-tail keywords. Instead of trying for high search volumes generic keywords, you can focus on those long-tail keywords using specific phrases and words that your target audience is searching for.

For example, if you are a yoga teacher in UK, make sure to target long-tail keywords such as 'uk yoga teacher' or 'personal yoga teacher uk' instead of generic and highly competitive keywords like 'yoga teacher' or 'yoga trainer'.

The idea behind it is to overcome high competition and help users reach your content through some other ideas, long-tail keywords are one of them.

7. Duplicate content on your own site

The same content over different links on your own site is again considered a red flag by search engines and Google will fire penalty for it reducing your rankings. 

Whether you are targeting the same or similar keywords or even keyword phrases or more pages its bad for seo. Even if you have similar content on a few pages, it's still duplicate content and bad for your rankings. 

Search engines are smart enough to understand whether a piece of content is original or a spinned one, and if you are creating similar content over and over using the same or similar keywords isn't like to rank in Google.

Solution: All your content should be completely original and optimized for unique keywords that are relevant to each page. Its also likely possible that your own unique, high-quality content is to fall under duplicate content issues. It can also be created by your own content management system.

You can use from many Search engine optimizers to figure out those issues. It will allow you to spot problem pages with missing or duplicate titles and descriptions so that you can fix them immediately. 

Once found, you can rewrite the content to make it 100% unique and second do a 301 redirect of the duplicate content to the canonical page. See here for how to do a 301 redirect on any platform. If it is difficult, your Site designer should be able to quickly do it for you. 

8. Improvize on low page speed

Your site might be in serious trouble overnight if some scripts or errors causing page loading issues. A page that loads slowly not only lose potential customers and revenue but also its visibility in search engines (SERPs).

Site Speed is a ranking factor and if your site loads slowly, it is unlikely to top the search results no matter how interesting your content is.

Solution: Head over to Google's free PageSpeed Insight tool and check your site loading speed for both desktop and mobile. 

9. Keyword Stuffing is not so good

Before decades, picking up on a few keywords and forcing them unnaturally into a wall of content was a valid strategy. 

But recently with ever-changing Google algorithms, keyword stuffing is hard for humans to read, provides little useful content and is interpreted by Google as spam. 

Solution: So the target for authoritative, well-written content with your selective keywords or phrases naturally sprinkled inside the articles.

10. Improve your social media integration

User engagement is the key to achieving and maintaining high Google rankings. The more social engaging means sure-shot jump in your Google Rankings.

Solution: Integrate Social sharing widgets on your pages, Socialize through comments and also use call-to-action tabs and forms to trigger more social integration.

11. Using too many H1 tags

H1 tags play a very specific role in telling Search engines what a web page is about. Using too many H1 tags can make your page look spammy and hurt rankings. 

Solution: Do not mess around titles (headers) and subheadings of the posts with similar keywords again and again.

12. Not submitting a Sitemap to Google

Search engines are not perfect in finding all your site links. If you submit a sitemap to Google, you will certainly improve Google's ability to find all the pages of your site. 

Solution: Submit your site directly to Google to increase the speed at which they will find all of your content.
